GlycoLax and Breastfeeding

No research has been done to determine if GlycoLax would pass through human breast milk. However, because it is not absorbed into the bloodstream, it is unlikely that this laxative would be passed through breast milk to a nursing infant. However, because there are unknown risks, make sure to consult your healthcare provider if you are thinking of breastfeeding while using GlycoLax.

Can Women Take GlycoLax While Breastfeeding?

GlycoLax™ (polyethylene glycol 3350) is a nonprescription, or over-the-counter (OTC), medication licensed to treat occasional constipation. Currently, it is unknown whether GlycoLax passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are nursing a child, talk with your healthcare provider before using this laxative.

(It should be noted that GlycoLax is no longer manufactured, although several different generic forms are still available.)

More Information on Breastfeeding and GlycoLax

No research has been done to see if GlycoLax passes through breast milk. Because the medication is not absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract after use, it is unlikely that it would reach the breast milk to be passed to an infant. However, because GlycoLax has not been studied in women who are breastfeeding, every potential problem cannot yet be ruled out.

If you require treatment for constipation while breastfeeding, your healthcare provider may recommend nonmedication options, such dietary changes, adequate fluid intake, or exercise within your ability. If medication is needed, your healthcare provider may recommend GlycoLax if safer alternatives are not an option.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and GlycoLax use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
