Available without a prescription, polyethylene glycol 3350 (MiraLAX®) is approved to treat occasional constipation. This over-the-counter (OTC) laxative works by drawing water into the colon, softening the stool, and increasing the frequency of bowel movements. Common side effects include nausea, gas, and diarrhea. This laxative comes in the form of a powder, which is dissolved in a beverage and swallowed once daily. Polyethylene glycol 3350 usually causes a bowel movement in one to three days.
